Custom Stainless Steel Bakery Trolley: OEM & ODM Buying Guide

Standard bakery trolleys work well when the trays, equipment and factory layout are already built around common dimensions.

That is not always the case.

Many commercial bakeries and food factories already have their own tray sizes, ovens, dryers, production lines or internal handling systems. In those situations, buying a standard trolley and trying to make it fit afterwards can create more problems than it solves.

A custom stainless steel bakery trolley starts from the customer’s actual production requirement.

That may mean changing the tray size, overall dimensions, number of levels, wheel configuration, stainless steel grade or even the frame structure.

For OEM and ODM projects, the trolley should fit the production line rather than forcing the production line to fit the trolley.

What can be customized?

The current trolley range allows customization of:

  • overall product size;
  • tray size;
  • number of layers;
  • stainless steel material;
  • frame structure;
  • wheel type;
  • surface finish;
  • packaging.

This covers most of the parameters that change from one bakery or food-processing project to another.

The real question is therefore not whether the trolley can be customized.

It is which parts actually need to be changed.

Start with the tray

For most custom trolley projects, the tray is the best place to start.

Common supported tray sizes include:

Stainless steel 201, 304 or 316

316 is available for environments where higher corrosion resistance is required.

This is why load should be part of the OEM specification from the beginning.

Wheels are part of the design, not an afterthought

The available caster materials include:

  • PU;
  • rubber;
  • nylon.

The casters support 360-degree swivel movement, with either two or four braked wheels available.

For custom projects, wheel selection should be based on:

  • loaded trolley weight;
  • floor condition;
  • travel distance;
  • frequency of movement;
  • and whether the trolley needs to remain fixed during loading.

A distributor selling bakery racks into different markets may also want a particular caster specification across the whole product line.

That can be included in an OEM requirement.

Surface finish

The trolley can be supplied with either polished or brushed surface treatment.

Polished surfaces provide a brighter appearance and are easy to clean.

Brushed surfaces have a more industrial appearance and tend to show minor scratches less clearly.

For distributors or private-label projects, keeping the same finish across different trolley models can also make the range look more consistent.

Packaging can be customized too

Packaging is often ignored until the final stage of a project.

If the design already comes from an established drawing and has been tested before, a small batch or direct production order may be more appropriate.

The right route depends on how much uncertainty exists in the design.

OEM and ODM are not exactly the same thing

For a typical OEM bakery trolley project, the customer already knows what they need.

They may provide:

  • drawings;
  • tray dimensions;
  • material grade;
  • wheel specification;
  • load requirement;
  • and packaging instructions.

The manufacturer produces according to that specification.

ODM work usually involves more input from the manufacturer in developing the final configuration.

For example, a customer may provide:

The manufacturer then works out the trolley dimensions, spacing and structure around the requirement.

In practice, many industrial trolley projects fall somewhere between the two.

The customer provides the operating requirements, and the final design is developed together.

Customization is not only useful for factories.

Distributors and equipment dealers may also want an OEM trolley range built around the tray standards commonly used in their market.

For example, a distributor could develop several related models:

  • finish;
  • packaging.

For a prototype, physically test the tray fit and movement if possible.

For repeat orders, use the approved drawing as the standard rather than relying on photos from the previous batch.
